Gender May Nudge Collecting Choices at the Margins: A Neuroscience Perspective
Here's the thing about collecting that most popular accounts miss: neuroscience doesn't back up the idea that men and women collect fundamentally different things because they have fundamentally different brains. It shows something far more interesting—and far less binary.
Male and female brains, according to extensive research, are far more alike than different. The overlap across individuals is enormous. Yes, researchers find some average sex differences in brain structure and function, but these differences are generally small relative to the variation within each sex. That matters enormously for understanding collecting, because collecting is shaped far more by personality, culture, opportunity, memory, and emotion than by any simple binary of "male brain" or "female brain."
Still. Gendered experience may influence what people notice, value, organize, and preserve. Not because biology writes the script, but because culture hands each of us a different set of props.
The Neuroscience of Overlap
The popular narrative—women collect this, men collect that—simply doesn't hold up to scrutiny. Brain researcher Lise Eliot and colleagues have published several comprehensive syntheses showing that human brain studies reveal few male-female differences beyond overall size. Their 2021 paper in Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews (volume 125, pages 667–697) literally calls for dumping the "dimorphism" framework.
Another study, published in PNAS in 2015 by Daphna Joel and colleagues, describes the human brain as a "mosaic"—a complex mixture of features, most of which are not exclusively "male" or "female." Some men may resemble women more than members of their own sex, on measures of brain structure.
Group averages can be statistically real without being practically predictive for any one person. Especially when distributions overlap so widely. Collecting, then, cannot be explained as "women collect this" and "men collect that" in any rigid sense.
What Gendered Experience Actually Does
Even so, there are pathways by which gendered experience could shape collecting preferences. And they're more subtle—and more interesting—than most people think.
Socialization affects what objects are presented as desirable. It determines what hobbies are encouraged. It influences how much room a person feels entitled to take up in a home. It decides which forms of knowledge are rewarded as "serious" or "frivolous."
Consider a child who is praised for tidiness. That child may become a collector of curated, orderly objects—china, first editions, vintage watches. Another child, encouraged toward expertise, may collect in ways that emphasize taxonomy, completeness, provenance, or investment value. These are not biological destinies. They are behavioral archives of upbringing, identity, and social expectation.
The substance of collections may also reflect gendered pathways through life. Some people are drawn to objects that support caregiving, memory, beauty, or domestic continuity. Others are drawn to technical, historical, or financial systems of value. A woman who collects wine may be driven by sensory knowledge and social ritual. A man who collects fashionable clothing may be motivated by design history or nostalgia. The object itself tells us less than the meaning the collector assigns to it.
Yet these tendencies are not owned by one sex or the other. Any observed differences are better understood as tendencies shaped by circumstances.
Collecting Under Uncertainty
Research on gender and decision-making also cautions against overinterpreting differences in decision style. Such differences can be influenced by context, stress, confidence, and social norms rather than reflecting fixed traits.
That's directly relevant to collecting, because acquisition decisions are decisions under uncertainty. Should I buy this now? Is this authentic? Will it matter later? Who else values it?
In some settings, men and women may navigate these questions differently on average. But those differences are too mixed and too mutable to justify sweeping claims about taste or competence.
The Neuropsychological Reality
Collecting also has a neuropsychological dimension that resists broad gender explanations. People collect to regulate affect, preserve identity, manage loss, build community, signal expertise, or create coherence in an unstable world—among other motives.
Those reasons can be intensified by life stage, trauma, social isolation, wealth, and opportunity. None of these can be attributed to sex.
If gender contributes at all, it likely does so by filtering the route into collecting, not by dictating the outcome. Culture teaches people what to admire, what to save, what to display, and what to call expertise. Biology may contribute to broad constraints on temperament and reward sensitivity. But the actual collection—art, antiques, wine, dolls, tools, records, books, teapots, minerals, memorabilia—usually emerges from a highly personal mix of curiosity and chance.
The result is not two kinds of collectors. It's many kinds of humans.
That is the healthiest way to think about the topic: with respect for real differences, but far more for overlap, individuality, and context. Gender may nudge collecting choices at the margins. Yet the larger story is that people collect because objects help them remember, organize, and express who they are.
