The Moment You Realize the Theory Was Wrong
It hits you during a routine audit or a client workshop. You're explaining a concept you've taught for years, maybe even built a career around, and suddenly a graduate student raises their hand—or a recent paper lands on your feed—and you realize: this isn't true anymore.
For me, it was the lizard brain.
I'd used the triune brain model—the idea that we have a primitive "reptilian" layer for survival, a mammalian limbic system for emotion, and a neocortex for reason—for over a decade. I recommended it to clients. I cited it in training materials. It made intuitive sense. Then I read Cesario, Johnson, and Eisthen's 2020 paper in Current Directions in Psychological Science, which bluntly stated: the psychology 101 model of the brain is wrong.
We don't have a triune brain. The regions didn't evolve in layers. Emotions and higher reasoning aren't separated the way the model suggests. The in-crowd of neuroscientists had moved on decades ago. But I hadn't known.
And I'm not alone. Five security analysts I spoke with in the last year still use "lizard brain" in incident reports. One wrote: "The team's amygdala was overactive during the ransomware response." They weren't being poetic. They thought it was accurate.
This isn't about neuroscience trivia. It's about the cost of clinging to comfortable myths when the truth is messy, complex, and requires work.
Why the Research Never Reached You
There's a reason you're still reading about the triune brain in 2026. It's not that you're lazy. Or gullible. It's that the system is broken.
A 2011 meta-study by Morris, Wooding, and Grant found that, on average, it takes seventeen years for new medical research to reach clinical practice. Neuroscience? Same. Maybe worse.
Why?
- Paywalls. The most important papers live behind journals that cost $40 a month. Your hospital doesn't pay for them. Your university doesn't either. Unless you're connected to an institution with free access, keeping up with your field can cost hundreds of dollars per year.
- Jargon. A paper on predictive processing might use 12 different terms for "the brain guesses what's coming next." If you're a compliance officer who hasn't touched a textbook since grad school, you give up.
- Time. You're auditing Veeam backups. You're filling out SOC 2 controls. You're responding to an Office 365 alert. You don't have 8 hours to read a 50-page paper in Nature Reviews Neuroscience.
- Textbooks. Of the 20 psychology textbooks sampled in 2020, 86% still taught the triune brain as fact. Only two got it right.
The research community is elite—in the sense that relatively few people can devote themselves to a life of research—and elitist, in that there are powerful barriers to entry, including the time, energy, and money to complete a Ph.D. This insularity has meant that the general public (and clinicians) are unable to access up-to-date scientific developments, because they are not a part of the research in-crowd.
We're not just stuck with a bad metaphor. We're stuck with a broken pipeline of knowledge.
How Practitioners Actually Discover Disconfirmation
If the research lag is 17 years, how do any of us ever find out when a theory is debunked?
From my own experience and conversations with colleagues, there are four main pathways:
- Graduate education updates. If you're going back to school, you'll encounter newer models. But not everyone has the time or resources to return to academia.
- Conferences and workshops. Cutting-edge researchers sometimes present at professional gatherings. If you attend, you might hear the debunking firsthand. But these are often expensive, geographically limited, or focused on niche topics.
- Science journalism. Publications like Science Focus and Salon have run pieces debunking the lizard brain myth (Arthur, 2025; Rosza, 2020). This is often the first exposure for non-researchers. But not everyone reads science journalism.
- Professional organization guidelines. Some fields update their practice guidelines based on systematic reviews. If your organization incorporates evidence-based updates, you might discover disconfirmation through policy changes. But this depends on your field's willingness to revise old standards.
The path back to source involves following citations in debunking articles to original studies, using databases like Retraction Watch for retracted papers, and consulting systematic reviews or meta-analyses that synthesize current consensus.
The Lizard Brain as a Case Study
Paul MacLean developed the triune brain concept from the 1940s to the 1960s, assuming the brain had three distinct layers: a primitive "lizard brain" for autonomic functions, a "mammalian brain" for emotions and memory, and a "neocortex" for reason and logic. This model made sense to people. It was intuitive.
But it was found to be incorrect by the 1990s. We don't have a triune brain. The regions didn't evolve as suggested. The separation between emotions and higher functions doesn't exist. Researchers in the in-crowd moved on to more grounded ideas by the end of the 20th century. The research lag—of more than a quarter century—has had far-reaching consequences. Disconfirmed theories persist in therapy because researchers are an elite, insular group with barriers to entry. Access to research journals is expensive. Clinicians often lack the time and resources to keep up with research updates.
Other neuromyths persist too: the left-right brain myth, the "using only 10% of your brain" myth, the mirror neuron myth. These have all been disconfirmed, yet they circulate as if they're accepted science.
Tracking Back to Source: A Practical Playbook
So you've discovered a theory you've been using is wrong. What now?
Here's what I've learned from tracking down sources after realizing the lizard brain was a mistake:
Follow the citations. When you read a debunking article—like Arthur's 2025 piece in Science Focus or Cesario et al.'s 2020 paper—look at their references. Trace the chain back to the original studies. This is how you verify claims and understand the full context.
Use Retraction Watch. If a paper has been retracted, Retraction Watch is the go-to database. It's free, searchable, and maintained by journalists and researchers who track retractions across fields.
Consult systematic reviews and meta-analyses. These synthesize current consensus and are more reliable than individual studies. They're also more likely to be available through open-access channels.
Join professional organizations. Many offer member discounts on journal access, host conferences with cutting-edge research, and publish practice guidelines that incorporate evidence-based updates.
Read science journalism. Publications like Science Focus, Salon, and Johns Hopkins Perspective in Research (Learman, 2019) make complex research accessible. They're not peer-reviewed, but they're peer-informed.
This isn't about being right. It's about being useful. The next time you encounter a theory, ask: When was this last updated? Who has access to the research? What's the current consensus?
What This Means for Security & Compliance Analysts
The same principles apply to our field.
We're told certain frameworks are "best practices." We cite them in incident response playbooks. We build compliance programs around them. But what if those frameworks are outdated?
Consider the cloud security incident response playbook. Many organizations still follow models developed before zero-trust architecture, before SaaS sprawl, before AI-assisted attacks. The research on modern threat landscapes moves faster than our documentation.
When you're managing 365 environments, auditing Veeam backups, or responding to a cloud security incident, you're dealing with a rapidly evolving field. The theories you learned five years ago might be obsolete.

So how do you track back to source?
- Subscribe to security-focused journals. Many are open access. Use them.
- Attend conferences. Even virtual ones. Hear what researchers are saying now, not five years ago.
- Follow security journalists. They translate complex research into actionable insights.
- Consult systematic reviews. Look for meta-analyses on threat modeling, incident response, or compliance frameworks.
- Question assumptions. If a theory feels too simple, it probably is.
This isn't about abandoning old knowledge. It's about updating it. The next time you write an incident report, audit a system, or design a compliance framework, ask: Is this based on current research? Or is it a 17-year-old myth?
Fixing the Pipeline
I'm not here to shame you for using outdated theories. I used the lizard brain too. For years.
I'm here to say: we can do better. But it won't happen by accident.
We need to fix the pipeline.
- Publishers: Stop hiding research behind paywalls. Make summaries. Make podcasts. Make YouTube videos. The public isn't asking for a PhD—they're asking for clarity.
- Educators: Stop teaching myths. If your textbook says "lizard brain," replace it. Use the 2020 paper from Current Directions in Psychological Science. It's open access. Read it.
- Organizations: Don't just train analysts on SOC 2 controls. Train them on how the human brain works under stress. Include neurobiology in your compliance onboarding.
- You: When you hear "lizard brain," say something. Say: "That's outdated. Here's what we know now."
The triune brain didn't die because scientists said so. It died because we stopped believing in it.
We can do the same with every myth that's holding us back.
