How Laughter and Neurodiversity Shape the Developing Mind
When your child laughs at a joke you missed, or solves a math problem in their head before you've finished asking the question, there's something happening behind those eyes that's both wonderful and bewildering. As a neuroscientist who studies how brains grow, I've come to understand that bright minds don't just develop faster—they develop differently. And that difference often shows up as asynchronous development: some parts of their brain racing ahead while others are still catching up.
Every Brain Is a Fingerprint
Start with this: your child's brain is as unique as a fingerprint. No two brains are identical. This isn't just poetic—science confirms it. Advances in brain mapping and imaging software have shown us that each person has their own genetic makeup, processes information through their five senses in distinct ways, expresses emotions uniquely, and carries specific autobiographical memories that shape neural pathways.
When you see your bright child navigating the world their own way, you're witnessing this neurological individuality in action. If they have quirky behaviors—whether that's intense focus on certain topics or difficulty with social cues—it may well be that their brain, body, and particular physiology are at the core of how they experience everything.
The UCLA Study That Changed Everything
In early 2006, a foundational study by Shaw and colleagues at the UCLA Imaging Institute followed more than 300 children for twelve years, mapping brain development from ages seven to nineteen. They created three-dimensional brain maps and calculated measurements of grey and white matter from brain scans. The children completed IQ tests and were placed in three groups: average, high, and superior intelligence.
What they found was both surprising and profound: all the children showed asynchronous brain development—meaning regions of the brain grew at varying rates at various points in time. Brain growth was particularly specific to the onset of puberty, when there are vast brain expansions and major changes in hormonal systems. But here's where it gets interesting for bright kids: children in the superior intelligence group had an even greater increase in brain growth, specifically in the frontal cortex, from the onset of puberty through age fifteen.
The Frontal Cortex: Executive Function's Command Center
The frontal cortex, which develops in humans all the way through the third decade of life, is the holy grail for executive functioning, intuitive problem-solving, communication, and emotional saliency. This area handles planning, completing tasks, focusing on any sort of activity, it's essentially the brain's CEO. It's also the mother lode for behavior and cognition.
In bright children, a common challenge is remaining focused and being productive where there's a disconnect between their ability, functioning, and natural talents. Their cognitive regions may be firing at rocket speed while other areas are still under construction. This can create real friction in everyday life.
Twice-Exceptional: The Hidden Struggle
We know bright children often express extraordinary gifts but also have great challenges that they either mask or are unaware of. Standard measures of intelligence, such as IQ tests, pose serious issues for 2e (twice exceptional) students because their weaknesses can preclude them from demonstrating their strengths.
Consider a child reading at a college level who struggles with writing, they may not be able to show the depth and complexity of their textual understanding because the motor planning required for writing hasn't caught up to their linguistic genius. Or my son, who was known as the absent-minded professor in middle school: he did his work ahead of time but forgot to turn it in. Missing those assignments was not a true evaluation of his abilities or an understanding of his brainpower and functioning.
Asynchronous brain development may be at the heart of what we're seeing in these bright children. There may be one or more greatly over-expanded and well-developed brain regions amidst other regions that are developmentally behind, compromising cognitive processing and executive functioning skills.
The Three-Year-Old Who Hates Loud Noises
Imagine a three-year-old child with a well-developed brain area for audition (sensory processing for sound). For him, sounds are heard louder, sooner, and in some cases can reach a threshold of pain. Given the child's age, an underdeveloped frontal cortex could make it difficult to regulate this threshold, resulting in what looks like "bad behavior." A child could be tagged as a problem case rather than understood as having a specific disability that causes them to suffer.
This misidentification and misunderstanding could cause greater stress in the child and everyone around him, since the actual issue is not addressed. Understanding that the frontal cortex greatly expands during puberty could be key to understanding asynchronous behavior in gifted and 2e children. When we see these troubling behaviors, it's critical that we completely understand their causes.
The Good News: We're Not Doomed
Are we doomed if we have a bright child? No. We simply have to pay closer attention to their particular ways of navigating the world. That's where laughter comes in, laughter creates positive neural plasticity and strengthens those precious connections between brain regions that are developing at different speeds.
When your bright kid laughs, they're not just being silly, they're building neural pathways. Laughter reduces stress hormones, releases endorphins, and creates what neuroscientists call "positive associations." These positive associations are the foundation of learning and development. The more you can create joyful moments with your child, the more you're supporting their brain's natural growth patterns.
Strategies That Actually Work
Evidence-based strategies for supporting bright asynchronous learners include:
Identify the origin of their learning difference. Don't assume laziness or defiance when you see struggle. Look instead at what might be developmentally behind and support that area specifically.
Implement appropriate accommodations. If your child's writing is slow but their ideas are brilliant, let them type. If reading is a challenge but they grasp concepts quickly, provide audio versions. Work with their brain, not against it.
Allow them to learn at their own pace. Pushing a bright child through areas where they're developmentally behind often creates resistance and anxiety. Let them engage deeply with what's accessible while providing gentle support for the rest.
Nurture strengths and challenges equally. This means providing more opportunities for success than failure. When your child excels at something, celebrate it genuinely, and when they struggle elsewhere, offer specific help rather than criticism.
Encourage divergent thinking. Bright minds thrive on novelty and complexity. Ask "what if" questions. Present open-ended problems. Let them explore multiple solutions.
Find out what they love and let them run with it. Passion fuels learning. When your child is deeply engaged in something, their brain is in an optimal state for growth and connection-making.
Connect them with like-minded peers. This way they know they're not alone and become part of a community where asynchronous development makes sense rather than confusion.
For my absent-minded professor son, a simple solution was creating a single homework folder that was turned in to his homeroom teacher at the start of each day. This gave him a foundation and a simple repetitive task, which then translated into positive behavior and feelings of success. Ultimately, we changed the mind-body connection with a positive solution. Coincidentally (or perhaps not so coincidentally), this aligned with his natural development as his executive functioning skills caught up with his neurodiverse mind.
The Road Ahead
Mary Oliver wrote, "In creative work, creative work of all kinds, those who are the world's working artists are not trying to help the world go around, but forward." It is our job as a society to find creative solutions to help these children thrive and move forward into a future where all shapes and sizes of neurodiversity are simply a way of life.
As guides, we need to allow space and time for the bright mind to break free from the ordinary, experience the extraordinary, and then awaken to life. The asynchronous brain may present challenges, but it also holds incredible potential for creativity, innovation, and perspective that monochromatic development cannot match.
The next time your bright child does something that puzzles you, whether it's laughing at an odd moment or struggling with a basic task, they're not being difficult. They're navigating a world with a brain that's growing in its own unique, beautiful, asynchronous way. And with the right support, they'll thrive.
