The Java Story, a new documentary produced by Cult.Repo (formerly Honeypot.io), proves that one of the most dominant computing platforms in history was forged in chaos and saved by a panic rewrite days before launch.
Before Java ran enterprise banking networks or processed space exploration telemetry reported by outlets like Space.com: NASA, Space Exploration and Astronomy News, it was a failing experiment inside a Sun Microsystems spin-in called FirstPerson.
The Interactive TV Flop That Almost Killed Oak
In 1994, Sun was minting money selling UNIX workstations to engineers. But management wanted to expand into consumer hardware. They established FirstPerson to bid on interactive video-on-demand software for Time Warner set-top boxes. James Gosling wrote a dedicated programming language and runtime for the project, initially called Oak.
The venture crashed quickly. Time Warner awarded the lucrative contract to Silicon Graphics (SGI), leaving Sun to pull the plug on FirstPerson and lay off most of its staff. The setback was brutal. Sun kept twelve engineers on Oak, including Gosling, Lindholm, and project manager Kim Polese. The team needed a new direction fast. One surviving engineer, playing with the early Mosaic web browser, realized the emerging World Wide Web was the perfect environment for interactive software.
The team built WebRunner, a Mosaic clone written in Oak, capable of rendering inline animations. That prototype laid the foundation for web applets. In early 1995, Oak was officially renamed Java—a nod to the engineering team's heavy coffee consumption.

Just days before the public stage demo, Java kept crashing. Lindholm tracked down the flaw: the threading model was fundamentally broken. System interrupts were firing while the SPARC processor was in the middle of executing instructions. The processor could not restore its memory state and suffered complete system failure.
With only three days left before Sun CEO Scott McNealy took the stage, Lindholm took a massive gamble. He discarded and completely rewrote the core threads package under extreme pressure. At SunWorld, Lindholm sat in the audience expecting the worst, but the emergency hotfix held up during the live presentation. The project survived its biggest vulnerability.
Early Open Source Experiments and the Pirate T3 Line
Following the SunWorld announcement, public interest exploded. Early web developers hit the limits of static HTML and rushed to adopt Java. Traffic to Sun's web servers surged so violently that the Java team secretly ran a dedicated pirate T3 bandwidth line directly into their office to handle the download volume.
Long before OpenJDK became the standard, Sun experimented with early open-source distribution. Sun offered free downloads of the binary runtime and distributed full source code to any developer who requested it. Lindholm reasoned that if Sun ever canceled the project, outside developers could maintain the codebase. Outside contributions helped port Java to new hardware platforms and fix early bugs.
Free Software Foundation founder Richard Stallman visited Sun to advocate for free software licensing, but Sun executives viewed his philosophy as too radical for enterprise software. Sun kept source code distribution informal, delaying official open-source licensing for over a decade.
Browser Applets, Enterprise Backends, and the Microsoft War
While web applets initially grabbed headlines, they suffered adoption friction against competitors like JavaScript and ColdFusion. Java's real transformation happened on enterprise back-end servers, where stability and cross-platform portable bytecode outmatched native alternatives.
Java's rapid enterprise expansion alarmed Microsoft. Seeing Java as a direct threat to Windows NT dominance, Microsoft licensed Java in 1996 but introduced proprietary extensions while dropping key APIs to create Microsoft J++. Sun filed a landmark lawsuit alleging that Microsoft was breaking cross-platform compatibility to lock developers into Windows.
The multi-year legal battle drained engineering energy, forcing key architects like Lindholm into days of intense legal depositions. The dispute eventually ended with Microsoft paying Sun nearly $2 billion in legal settlements, but the conflict took a heavy personal toll on the engineering team.
From Sun's Implosion to Modern JVM Ecosystems
Over the following decades, Java expanded through the complex J2EE framework era, found renewed agility through the Spring framework, and navigated Sun's eventual decline and acquisition by Oracle. The Java team grew so large it eventually took over Sun's headquarters before relocating to Apple's former campus.
Lindholm left Sun in the early 2000s to join Google, where he spent two decades before retiring in early 2026.
