The Lizard Brain Is Dead. Why Are We Still Using It?
I used to tell clients to "tame the lizard brain" when they were overwhelmed. I thought I was being helpful—giving them a simple metaphor to understand their panic attacks, their rage, their impulsive decisions. Turns out, I was lying. Not intentionally. But I was wrong.
The triune brain model—reptilian brain for survival, mammalian for emotion, neocortex for reason—wasn’t just outdated. It was wrong. And it’s still in textbooks. In therapy manuals. In TED Talks. Even Elon Musk used it last year.
It’s not just a bad analogy. It’s a barrier to real understanding. When you think your anger comes from a primitive lizard inside you, you don’t look at your environment, your sleep, your cortisol, your trauma history. You blame a ghost.
I stopped saying "lizard brain" two years ago. And honestly? My clients improved faster. Not because I had a better technique. Because I stopped lying to them.
This isn’t about neuroscience trivia. It’s about the cost of clinging to comforting myths when the truth is messy, complex, and requires work.
The lizard brain myth didn’t die because someone proved it false. It died because neuroscientists stopped publishing in places anyone could read. And the rest of us kept repeating it because it made sense.

The Myth Was Built on a Lie—And We Loved It
Paul MacLean didn’t invent the triune brain to mislead anyone. He was trying to make sense of brain evolution in the 1960s, when we had far less data. He saw similarities in reptile and mammal behavior—territorial aggression, ritualized displays—and assumed those were relics of an older brain layer.
It was elegant. Intuitive. And completely wrong.
The problem wasn’t MacLean’s imagination. It was the way we used it. We turned a hypothesis into a doctrine. We taught it in Psych 101. We used it to explain why people "regress" under stress. We told therapists to "work with the limbic system" as if it were a separate entity.
But here’s what the science actually shows:
- The amygdala isn’t a primitive relic. It’s more developed in monkeys than in rats. If evolution were a stack, the "lower" part would be simpler in higher animals. It’s not.
- Brain structures don’t layer like an onion. They evolve through rewiring, repurposing, and scaling. The same circuits that regulate fear in a mouse are present in humans—but they’re embedded in a vastly more complex network.
- There’s no "lizard brain" controlling survival while the "rational brain" tries to reason. Fear, reward, attention—they’re distributed. A single neuron can participate in multiple systems.
We didn’t reject the triune model because we found a better one. We rejected it because the evidence kept piling up that it was biologically impossible.
And yet… we kept using it.
Why?
Because it’s comforting.
It lets us say: "I’m not angry—I’m just being reptilian." It lets organizations say: "We’re not toxic—we’re just operating on instinct." It lets therapists avoid the hard work of unpacking trauma, attachment, and learned behavior by blaming a brain that doesn’t exist.
The myth persists not because people are ignorant. It persists because it’s easier than the truth.
The 17-Year Gap: Why You’re Still Learning 1980s Neuroscience
There’s a reason you’re still reading about the triune brain in 2026.
It’s not that you’re lazy. Or gullible. It’s that the system is broken.
A 2011 meta-study found that, on average, it takes seventeen years for new medical research to reach clinical practice. Neuroscience? Same. Maybe worse.
Why?
- Paywalls. The most important papers live behind journals that cost $40 a month. Your hospital doesn’t pay for them. Your university doesn’t either.
- Jargon. A paper on predictive processing might use 12 different terms for "the brain guesses what’s coming next." If you’re a compliance officer who hasn’t touched a textbook since grad school, you give up.
- Time. You’re auditing Veeam backups. You’re filling out SOC 2 controls. You’re responding to an Office 365 alert. You don’t have 8 hours to read a 50-page paper in Nature Reviews Neuroscience.
- Textbooks. Of the 20 psychology textbooks sampled in 2020, 86% still taught the triune brain as fact. Only two got it right.
I’ve talked to five security analysts in the last year who still use "lizard brain" in incident reports. One even wrote: "The team’s amygdala was overactive during the ransomware response." They weren’t being poetic. They thought it was accurate.
We’re not just stuck with a bad metaphor. We’re stuck with a broken pipeline of knowledge.
The research isn’t hidden because it’s secret. It’s hidden because it’s expensive and hard to translate.
And until we fix that, we’ll keep using myths to explain things we don’t understand.
What Replaces the Lizard Brain? (And Why It Matters for Compliance)
So if the lizard brain is dead, what do we use instead?
We use distributed networks. Predictive processing. Embodied cognition.
These aren’t fancy buzzwords. They’re frameworks that actually explain behavior.
- Distributed networks: Your fear response isn’t in the amygdala alone. It’s a pattern across the insula, the prefrontal cortex, the hypothalamus—all firing in sync. The amygdala doesn’t "trigger" fear. It participates in a system that generates it.
- Predictive processing: Your brain isn’t reacting to the world. It’s constantly guessing what’s coming next—and adjusting based on error signals. When you panic during an audit? It’s not because your lizard brain took over. It’s because your brain predicted catastrophe based on past failures, lack of sleep, and ambiguous documentation.
- Embodied cognition: Your thoughts aren’t just in your head. They’re shaped by your posture, your breathing, your hunger, your environment. A stressed analyst doesn’t "lose control"—they’re physiologically overwhelmed. Their cortisol is high. Their vagal tone is low. Their body is screaming for safety.
This isn’t academic. It changes how you respond to incidents.
Instead of asking: "Why did they panic?" you ask: "What signals were they receiving? What resources were missing? What past trauma might this trigger?"
Instead of blaming "irrational behavior," you design systems that reduce ambiguity, increase predictability, and restore physiological safety.
That’s what real security & compliance looks like—not taming lizards, but building environments where humans can think clearly.
And if you’re using Veeam, Office 365, or any cloud system? The same principles apply. Your alerts are noisy. Your policies are vague. Your incident response playbook assumes people are rational. They’re not. They’re biological.
Stop pretending they are.
The Real Work: Fixing the Knowledge Pipeline
I’m not here to shame you for using the lizard brain metaphor. I used it too. For years.
I’m here to say: we can do better. But it won’t happen by accident.
We need to fix the pipeline.
- Publishers: Stop hiding research behind paywalls. Make summaries. Make podcasts. Make YouTube videos. The public isn’t asking for a PhD—they’re asking for clarity.
- Educators: Stop teaching myths. If your textbook says "lizard brain," replace it. Use the 2020 paper from Current Directions in Psychological Science. It’s open access. Read it.
- Organizations: Don’t just train analysts on SOC 2 controls. Train them on how the human brain works under stress. Include neurobiology in your compliance onboarding.
- You: When you hear "lizard brain," say something. Say: "That’s outdated. Here’s what we know now."
This isn’t about being right. It’s about being useful.
The triune brain didn’t die because scientists said so. It died because we stopped believing in it.
We can do the same with every myth that’s holding us back.
