These tools are built for creators who want to ship fully functioning databases. Canva isn't competing on that level. Wu was clear: this tool is not for programmers. It is for teachers, small businesses, and design teams. It is a path to easily add interactive modules—like a mortgage calculator or a live product roadmap—without needing a software engineer. This is a major platform play. By making the tool "pluggable," Canva doesn't have to win the raw generation race. If a developer builds an interactive widget in Claude, a designer can import it, slap on the brand colors, and drop it into a client presentation without writing a line of CSS.

When pressed on whether this is an attempt to become the "finishing layer" for all AI coding tools, Wu stayed pragmatic. He compared it to Canva's existing import options for PDFs and PowerPoints: it is about making the platform compatible. If compatibility pulls users away from other ecosystems and keeps them locked in Canva, then the strategy works, regardless of what label you attach to it.

The Clear Limits of Light Code

Security leads are already stressed about how to handle AI code sprawl inside the enterprise. Canva's approach limits this security vulnerability by narrowing the feature set. Wu was explicit that Canva Code is not meant for complex backends or consumer websites handling hundreds of thousands of daily visitors.

There is also the question of retention. Canva claims users have published six million websites over the past year using the tool.
